Senior Coverage Guides is an independent educational website about Medicare and senior health insurance. This page describes how we research, write, review, and maintain our content. We publish it because we believe readers of health and insurance content deserve to understand who is writing it and how.
Our Editorial Mission
Our goal is to give Medicare-eligible adults and their families the clearest, most accurate explanation of their coverage options available. We do not sell insurance. We do not accept payment from insurance companies, Medicare Advantage plans, or brokers to feature their products. Our revenue comes from display advertising served by Google AdSense and other ad networks, which is disclosed in our privacy policy.
Our editorial decisions are made independently of our advertising relationships. Advertisers have no input into which topics we cover or what our articles say.
Who Writes Our Content
All articles on this site are written by Ben Morton, the site's founder. Ben spent 12 years as a benefits consultant helping small and mid-sized businesses manage employee health insurance programs before retiring. He has personally guided multiple family members through Medicare enrollment and has studied Medicare policy, CMS regulations, and plan design extensively.
Ben is not a licensed insurance agent or Medicare counselor. Content on this site is educational, not personalized advice. We always recommend readers consult their state's free SHIP counselors for guidance specific to their situation.
How We Research Articles
Every article begins with primary sources. For Medicare content, those are:
- Medicare.gov -- the official federal Medicare resource, maintained by CMS
- CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) -- for regulations, program data, and official announcements
- Social Security Administration -- for enrollment rules, premium information, and IRMAA data
- Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) -- for independent policy analysis and research
- Medicare Interactive (Medicare Rights Center) -- for beneficiary-focused explanations
- SHIP National Technical Assistance Center -- for state-level enrollment guidance
We do not use insurer-produced content as a primary source for factual information. Insurance companies have commercial interests in how certain topics are framed, and we maintain independence from that.
Each article includes a Sources & References section at the bottom that links directly to the primary sources used.
Fact-Checking Process
Before publication, each article is reviewed against current CMS and Medicare.gov data to verify that premium figures, deductible amounts, enrollment dates, and coverage rules are accurate. Medicare data changes annually, so we note the year relevant figures apply to and update them when new data is released.
Cost figures such as premiums and deductibles are verified against the annual CMS press releases that announce the following year's figures, typically released each October or November.
Update Policy
Medicare premiums, deductibles, and cost-sharing change every year. We review and update all cost-related content each fall following CMS's annual release of the next year's Medicare figures (typically October through December).
For significant policy changes -- like new legislation, CMS rule changes, or new coverage decisions -- we publish updated or new content as soon as we can verify the information from official sources.
Articles display a "Published" date reflecting when the content was first posted and will display an "Updated" date when content has been materially revised.
Corrections Policy
We correct factual errors promptly when we become aware of them. If you find something on this site that appears to be inaccurate or out of date, please use our contact page to let us know. Include a link to the article and the specific information you believe needs correction.
We do not delete or alter published content to remove embarrassing errors. Significant corrections are noted in the article with a correction notice and the date the correction was made.
What We Don't Cover
This site covers Medicare and senior health insurance topics at an educational level. We do not provide personalized plan recommendations, tax advice, or legal advice. We do not have access to your personal health or financial information and cannot tell you which specific plan is right for your situation.
For personalized Medicare guidance, contact your state's SHIP program or call 1-800-MEDICARE.
